Pet Peeves of College Student Cashiers

What Annoys College Students Who Work As Cashiers?

It’s safe to say that we as college students who live close to campus or dorms like jobs that are walking distance for our own convenience. There are many options of jobs we can choose from, but food services seems to be the most common places to have job openings. When asked the question “What is the most annoying thing people do that irritate you the most?” to students who work near campus as cashiers. Students responded with a list of things they complain about.

Special request during busy time

During lunch or dinnertime when it’s slammed and there is always this one customer who stares at the menu for ages and still don’t know what to order.

Making a special/ limited time edition drink that feels like it’s going to take forever and there is a line going out of the door.

When customers  trying to have a depth long conversation with you when there are other customers  waiting.

When customers  order a sandwich during the rush hours, they list off everything they don’t want, but it would make 100 times easier if it was told as what they actually want in the sandwich.

Difficult customers with requests

When the food order has already processed, but asked to change the order when it’s closely being ready.

When customers ask, “ Can I have what that person had?”

When customers are not specific about their orders. For instance, “Can I not have that green stuff on there…?” Excuse me, what is the green stuff?

When customers  ask for the best thing on the menu, and they turn down everything you suggest.

When customers  ask for a refund when half of the food had already been eaten.

Whenever there is a customers who is allergic to gluten or seafood and asks to speak to the manager for 20 minutes about the ingredients, then decide not to order.

How uncomfortable cashiers feels when they are taking the food order over the phone or Face time.

Payment Methods

When paying in cash, after the register has already told how much to give back in change, then a late reaction from customers saying, “Oh, I have the change.”

When a customer’s card has been declined, but they deny it and argue as if the credit card machine is broken down.

Others… (The Worst)

When food from phone/App orders are ready to pick up, but customers don’t show up.

When customers are trying to order a minute before closing, and everything is already cleaned off.

In conclusion, it takes a special type of a person to work as cashier in food services. If you do decide to apply for one, make sure that special type of person is you.
